Have you tried Mango restaurant for Indian and Italian food on the same menu?
Now that’s a combination I can definitely get behind! 😂
On this occasion, we headed along to Mango Restaurant and Hotel in Longcroft, where they’ve got something a wee bit different on offer.
A menu combining both Indian and Italian food.
And as somebody who absolutely loves a good curry but is equally happy getting stuck into a lasagne or pizza, that’s a pretty appealing idea.
Especially when you’re eating out with people who don’t necessarily fancy the same type of food.
One person can go for an Indian curry.
Another can order an Italian favourite.
And everybody’s happy!
So we decided to give the lunch menu a try and see what Mango restaurant had to offer.
And overall, it was a very enjoyable visit, with a couple of interesting dishes along the way.
Indian and Italian Fusion at Mango Restaurant
Now, I should point out that this isn’t necessarily Indian and Italian flavours combined into every individual dish.
It’s more about having the choice of both cuisines on the same menu.
And personally, I think that’s a great idea.
Because there have been plenty of occasions when I’ve fancied an Indian meal but somebody else has been in the mood for something completely different.
So having that variety makes things a wee bit easier.
I’ve included photographs of the menu from our visit if you want to see the full selection available.
But for this review, I’ll concentrate on what we actually ordered and tried.
Poppadoms, Spiced Onions and Mango Chutney

We started things off with a familiar Indian restaurant favourite.
Poppadoms, spiced onions and mango chutney.
Now, this is something I’ve eaten more times than I could possibly count.
And while it’s not exactly the most adventurous way to start a meal, it’s something I always enjoy.
Especially when you’ve got a few tasty dips to go along with it.
Everything here was pretty much what you’d expect.
A nice wee appetiser to get us in the mood for the starters.
But I do want to give a special mention to the mango chutney.
Because I thought that was particularly tasty.
Sometimes it’s the wee extras that make the difference.
And this was a lovely start to the meal.
Cheesy Lamb Kofta Balls – Something Completely Different!

Now, this was probably one of the most interesting dishes of the visit.
Cheesy lamb kofta balls.
And believe it or not, this was something I’d never actually tried before.
I’ve eaten plenty of lamb dishes over the years.
And I’ve certainly had my fair share of koftas.
But cheesy lamb kofta balls?
That was a new one for me.
So naturally, I wanted to give them a go.
Now, I’ll admit something.
After the first bite, I wasn’t entirely sure what I thought of them.
It wasn’t an immediate case of falling in love with the dish.
There was something about the combination that took me a wee moment to get used to.
But as I continued eating and all the different flavours started coming through, they really grew on me.
And by the end, I was thoroughly enjoying them.
It’s funny how that happens sometimes.
You try something new and your first reaction is a little uncertain.
But then, after another couple of bites, everything starts to make sense.
And that’s exactly what happened here.
I’d definitely eat these again.
In fact, it’s made me interested in trying similar dishes elsewhere.
Because if they’re all as enjoyable as these were, I’ve clearly been missing out!
A cracking wee discovery.
Sticky Honey Chicken

We also ordered the sticky honey chicken.
Now, this wasn’t actually my dish, so I only managed to get a wee taste.
And because of that, I’m not going to pretend I can give you a full review of the portion.
But what I did try was very tasty.
The sauce reminded me of a lovely sweet-and-sour-style flavour.
And I thought it worked really well.
It was definitely something I enjoyed tasting.
Although I would need to order a full portion myself before giving a more detailed verdict.
But based on that wee sample, it certainly made a good impression.
Lasagne – Not Quite What I Expected!

Now, let’s get into my main course.
Normally, when I’m visiting somewhere that serves Indian food, there’s a pretty good chance I’ll end up ordering a curry.
It’s just what I do.
But I’d already had a curry a few days earlier, so I decided to mix things up a wee bit.
And since Mango offers Italian food alongside the Indian menu, I thought I’d give that side of things a try.
So I ordered the lasagne.
Now, this turned out to be quite an interesting one.
Because I have to say, it was definitely different from the lasagnes I’m used to eating.
There was something about the overall flavour that wasn’t quite what I’d expected.
And I couldn’t immediately put my finger on exactly what it was.
It just wasn’t the more traditional lasagne flavour that I personally tend to enjoy.
But here’s the thing.
I still ate every single bit of it! 😂
And not only that.
I was actually trying to scrape up the last wee bits of food left in the dish.
So clearly I wasn’t having too difficult a time eating it!
And I think that’s important to point out.
Because sometimes a dish can be enjoyable without necessarily being one of your favourites.
And that’s exactly how I’d describe this lasagne.
I enjoyed eating it.
I finished the lot.
But would I put it up there with the best lasagnes I’ve ever tried?
Probably not.
And if you’re somebody who particularly enjoys a traditional Italian-style lasagne, I’d say this one might be a little different from what you’re expecting.
At least that’s how I found it.
Of course, food is completely subjective.
What I consider an unusual flavour might be exactly what somebody else loves.
And I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a bad dish.
Far from it.
It just wasn’t quite the style of lasagne I personally prefer.
But I still managed to leave a very clean dish behind. 😂
Chicken Chasni

We also had a Chicken Chasni at the table.
Now, as much as I love a good Chasni, this wasn’t my main course.
And I didn’t try enough of it to give you a proper opinion.
So I’m not going to start making claims about how good or bad it was.
I’ll leave that for somebody who actually ordered it!
But it was another example of the variety available at Mango.
While I was getting stuck into my lasagne, there was an Indian curry being enjoyed at the same table.
And that’s one of the main attractions of having both cuisines on the menu.
No Room for Dessert!
Now, we did have a wee look at the desserts.
And I even managed to get some photographs of them on the way out.
But unfortunately, we were absolutely stuffed.
So there was no room left for anything else.
Which, considering how much I enjoy a dessert, is always a bit disappointing.
But sometimes you just have to admit defeat.
And after working our way through the starters and mains, that was definitely the case here.
Perhaps something to explore on a future visit!
Lovely Service at Mango Restaurant
One thing I definitely want to highlight is the service.
Because we were made to feel very welcome.
In particular, there was a really lovely lady at the front of house who welcomed us in and saw us out.
And I always appreciate that.
It’s such a simple thing, but a friendly welcome can make a big difference to the overall experience.
Especially when you’re visiting somewhere for the first time.
The service throughout our visit was great.
And it certainly contributed to what was an enjoyable meal.
Good food is obviously the main attraction when you’re going out to eat.
But good service is always a welcome bonus.
And Mango delivered on that front.
Would I Return to Mango Restaurant?
Yes, I would.
Although I think I’d make a slightly different choice next time.
Because while I enjoyed my lasagne, I think I’d be more inclined to order something from the Indian side of the menu on a return visit.
Not because the Italian food was bad.
But simply because Indian food is usually my preference, and I’d be interested to see what some of the other curries are like.
The cheesy lamb kofta balls were a lovely discovery.
The mango chutney was particularly tasty.
And the little taste I had of the sticky honey chicken was enjoyable too.
So there’s definitely enough here to make me interested in trying more.
And that’s always a good sign.

My Final Verdict – Mango Restaurant Longcroft
Well, this was a very enjoyable wee visit.
I really like the idea of having both Indian and Italian food available on the same menu.
Especially when you’re eating with people who fancy different things.
The poppadoms and dips were a nice start, with the mango chutney being particularly tasty.
The cheesy lamb kofta balls were something completely new to me and a dish that really grew on me.
And the sticky honey chicken was lovely from the wee taste I managed to get.
As for my lasagne?
Well, it was definitely different from what I’d expected.
And while I wouldn’t necessarily put it up there with my favourite lasagnes, I still thoroughly enjoyed eating it.
As evidenced by the fact that I was practically scraping the dish clean. 😂
Add in the lovely service and friendly welcome, and it was another enjoyable food stop.
An all-round thumbs up from Uncle Ribz!
And if I do return, I reckon I’ll be exploring the Indian side of the menu next time.
