McDonald’s Breakfast £10 Challenge – Is It Worth the Money?

Can you get a decent McDonald’s breakfast in the UK for under £10?

That’s exactly what I wanted to find out!

I’ve been trying out different food challenges recently, and this time I decided to head to McDonald’s to see what kind of breakfast I could put together with a £10 budget.

Rather than sticking to my usual order, I wanted to try a mixture of items from the McDonald’s breakfast menu, including a limited-time McGriddle.

Some were surprisingly good. Others? Well, let’s just say I won’t be rushing back for them! 😂

Here’s everything I tried and whether I’d recommend spending your money on it.

1. McDonald’s Sausage Sandwich – £1.99

First up was the sausage sandwich, coming in at just £1.99. A staple of the mcdonald’s breakfast range.

Now, this wasn’t anything particularly special, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It actually reminded me of some of the frozen breakfast sausage sandwiches I’ve had in the past.

The sausage was decent enough, and overall it was a perfectly acceptable wee breakfast sandwich.

Would I go out of my way to order it again? Probably not.

But for £1.99, I really can’t complain.

My verdict: A decent budget breakfast option that does exactly what you’d expect for the money.

Would I buy it again? Yes, especially if I was looking for something cheap and cheerful.

2. McDonald’s Cheesy Bacon Flatbread – £1.99

Oh dear.

This one was definitely the disappointment of the morning.

The cheesy bacon flatbread sounds like it should be a winner. Bacon, cheese and a flatbread. How difficult can it be?

Apparently, very difficult!

First impressions weren’t great because I wasn’t particularly impressed with the smell.

Unfortunately, things didn’t improve once I started eating it.

The cheese had that horrible plastic-like texture, while the bacon was rubbery and pretty unpleasant.

For me, there was very little to enjoy about this one.

I don’t often describe something as terrible, but I’m struggling to find a better word here.

At £1.99, it’s certainly cheap, but I’d rather spend that money on something else.

My verdict: Easily the worst item of the challenge.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely not! 😂

3. McDonald’s Hash Brown – £1.69

Now we’re talking!

If there’s one thing McDonald’s generally gets right at breakfast, it’s the hash brown.

And this one was absolutely the business.

Lovely and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle and with just the right amount of saltiness.

Exactly what I want from a breakfast hash brown.

There’s something about that combination of crispy potato and salt that just works.

At £1.69, it’s not the cheapest hash brown you’ll ever buy, but at least you’re getting something enjoyable.

Sometimes the simplest things are the best.

My verdict: Winner, winner! One of the highlights of the challenge.

Would I buy it again? Without a doubt.

4. Limited-Time McDonald’s Sausage & Egg McGriddle

This was probably the item I was most interested in trying.

The McGriddle is a bit different from your typical British breakfast sandwich, combining sausage and egg with a pancake-style bun that has a sweet maple syrup flavour.

If you’ve never tried one, you might be wondering whether sweet pancakes really work with sausage and egg.

I was wondering exactly the same thing!

But surprisingly, the combination worked really well.

The sweetness from the pancake-style bread complemented the savoury sausage and egg nicely.

It reminded me why sweet and savoury breakfast combinations are so popular in America.

You get that little hit of syrup flavour, followed by the sausage and egg, and somehow it all comes together.

I genuinely enjoyed this one.

It’s certainly different from your usual McDonald’s breakfast roll, but that’s part of the appeal.

My verdict: A surprisingly enjoyable combination of sweet and savoury flavours.

Would I buy it again? Definitely. I’d happily have another one.

How Much Did My McDonald’s Breakfast Cost?

Here’s the breakdown of the items I tried during my £10 McDonald’s breakfast challenge.

Breakfast ItemPrice
Sausage Sandwich£1.99
Cheesy Bacon Flatbread£1.99
Hash Brown£1.69
Sausage & Egg McGriddle£3.99
Total of confirmed prices£9.66

Prices are based on what I paid during my visit and may vary between McDonald’s restaurants. Limited-time menu items may no longer be available.

Ranking Everything I Tried

If I had to rank the four items from best to worst, here’s how I’d place them.

1st – McDonald’s Hash Brown 🥇

The business. Crispy, salty and delicious. Sometimes you just can’t beat the classics.

2nd – Sausage & Egg McGriddle 🥈

A really enjoyable surprise. The combination of sweet pancakes, sausage and egg worked much better than I expected.

3rd – Sausage Sandwich 🥉

Nothing spectacular, but decent value at £1.99. A perfectly acceptable budget breakfast.

4th – Cheesy Bacon Flatbread

Plastic-like cheese, rubbery bacon and an unpleasant smell. Not one I’ll be ordering again!

Is McDonald’s Breakfast Worth the Money?

I think it really depends on what you’re ordering.

There are definitely some decent breakfast options on the McDonald’s UK menu, especially if you’re looking for something quick and relatively inexpensive.

The sausage sandwich was reasonable value, while the hash brown was easily one of my favourites.

The limited-time McGriddle was also a pleasant surprise and something I’d happily eat again.

But the cheesy bacon flatbread?

I’d give that a miss.

That’s the thing about these challenges. Sometimes the cheapest items turn out to be brilliant, and sometimes they’re cheap for a reason!

My Final Verdict on the £10 McDonald’s Breakfast Challenge

Overall, I enjoyed putting this breakfast challenge together.

It gave me an excuse to try a few things I wouldn’t necessarily have ordered otherwise, and I discovered a new favourite in the McGriddle.

The hash brown remains a winner, the sausage sandwich was decent enough, and the flatbread is something I’d rather forget.

Would I recommend trying a McDonald’s breakfast on a budget?

Absolutely. Just choose carefully!

And if the McGriddle is available when you visit, I’d definitely recommend giving it a go.
