Porter & Rye Glasgow Review – Is This the Best Steakhouse in Scotland?

📍 Porter & Rye, 1131 Argyle Street, Finnieston, Glasgow

Is Porter & Rye the best steakhouse in Scotland?

Well, it certainly has a claim to the title.

Porter & Rye is the only steakhouse in Scotland to have made it onto the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list, and it has featured on the list for several years.

With a reputation like that, we obviously had to go along and see what all the fuss was about.

Would it live up to the hype? Or have we had better steak experiences elsewhere?

The short version?

We had an almost perfect meal — but it just fell short at the final hurdle.

Let’s start from the beginning…

A Great Start to the Meal

Before we’d even properly got started, we were given a wee amuse-bouche.

I think it was some sort of hummus served on a little piece of bread.

Did I ask exactly what it was?

Of course not.

I just gubbed it.

Whatever it was, though, it was awfy tasty and got the meal off to a cracking start.

Then came a little touch I don’t remember experiencing at a steakhouse before.

You get to choose your own steak knife.

It’s hardly going to make or break your dinner, but I really liked it.

A selection of knives was brought over and we each got to pick the one we wanted for our steak.

A small detail, but when you’re paying for a premium steakhouse experience, these little touches help make the meal feel that bit more special.

The T-Bone Steak

Now for the important part.

The steak.

I went for the T-bone, and the first thing that struck me wasn’t actually the flavour.

It was how ridiculously easy it was to cut.

This might genuinely be the softest, easiest-to-cut steak I’ve ever had.

My knife just flowed straight through it.

No fighting with the meat. No sawing away at each bite. No making an absolute mess of the plate trying to cut through it.

Just beautifully tender steak that sliced effortlessly.

And thankfully, the flavour matched the texture.

It was immense.

Every single bite was sublime.

There aren’t many things in life better to eat than a properly cooked steak, and Porter & Rye absolutely nailed this one.

When you’re visiting somewhere with this sort of reputation, you’re naturally going in with very high expectations.

The steak lived up to them.

Chimichurri With Steak – Where Have You Been All My Life?

For my sauce, I decided to try something slightly different and went for the chimichurri.

I’d never actually had chimichurri with steak before.

I’ve clearly been missing out.

I thought it was a brilliant pairing.

Fresh, punchy and packed with flavour without completely overpowering the steak.

It’s definitely shot right up my list of sauces I’ll be looking for whenever I’m ordering steak in future.

The Beef Dripping Chips Were Outstanding

Then we need to talk about the chips.

Beef dripping chips.

These were top tier.

Honestly, they were up there with some of the best chips I’ve had anywhere.

They had that perfect crunchy coating on the outside while remaining light and fluffy in the middle.

Then you’ve got the flavour from the beef dripping taking them to another level.

Absolutely outstanding.

If you’re visiting Porter & Rye, these would be very difficult for me not to recommend alongside your steak.

Bone Marrow & Pancetta Mac and Cheese

Because apparently steak and beef dripping chips weren’t enough food, we also ordered the bone marrow and pancetta mac and cheese.

Again, it was excellent.

Rich, indulgent and exactly the sort of side that belongs alongside a big steak.

On almost any other meal I’d probably have been talking much more about it.

Unfortunately for the mac and cheese, those beef dripping chips completely stole the show for me.

They were just that good.

At This Point, Porter & Rye Was Pretty Much Perfect

If I’d stopped eating there, I honestly don’t think I would have had a single complaint about the meal.

From the amuse-bouche and choosing our knives through to the T-bone, chimichurri, mac and cheese and those ridiculous chips…

Everything had been excellent.

It genuinely felt like one of the best steakhouse meals I’d had.

And then I ordered dessert.

The Only Disappointment of the Meal

If you look through my photos, you’ll see what looks like an upside-down ice cream cone.

Unfortunately, this was the only part of the meal I didn’t particularly enjoy.

It wasn’t necessarily horrendous.

It just didn’t do anything for me.

And perhaps some of the disappointment came from just how good everything before it had been.

When you’ve had course after course where everything feels elite, you naturally expect the meal to finish on the same level.

For me, it didn’t.

But there’s also an obvious counterpoint…

I’m not going to a steakhouse for dessert.

I’m going there for an incredible steak.

And that’s exactly what Porter & Rye gave me.

How Much Did Porter & Rye Cost?

From memory, we were around £120 in total, including the food and a couple of drinks.

So let’s get the obvious thing out of the way:

This isn’t a cheap dinner.

I’d put Porter & Rye firmly into the special occasion category rather than somewhere I’d casually pop into every other week.

But did I feel like I’d experienced a premium steakhouse?

Absolutely.

And I’d happily pay to go back.

Is Porter & Rye the Best Steakhouse in Scotland?

That’s a big claim.

Porter & Rye’s continued recognition among the world’s leading steakhouses certainly gives it some serious credentials.

But ultimately I can only judge it on the meal that was put in front of me.

And the steak I had at Porter & Rye was as good as I’ve had anywhere.

Beautifully tender, cooked perfectly and absolutely packed with flavour.

Throw in the chimichurri, phenomenal beef dripping chips, excellent mac and cheese and some lovely little touches throughout the experience, and this came incredibly close to being a perfect meal.

The dessert didn’t hit the same heights for me.

But would that stop me going back?

Not a chance.

I’d happily return for another special occasion — and next time I might just order another portion of those chips instead of dessert.
