Sometimes you don’t need fancy surroundings, elaborate presentation or a massive restaurant bill.
You just want good, traditional pub grub at a cracking price.
That’s exactly what I found at Tannochside Miners Welfare.
When I visited, the value lunch menu was offering two courses for £6.50 or three courses for £7.50.
Yes, you read that correctly.
It’s a proper no-frills local club, but when you’re getting multiple courses of traditional food for that sort of money, I’m not particularly interested in fancy decor.
Give me a plate of steak pie and some change from a tenner and I’m happy.
The Value Lunch Deal

The biggest reason I wanted to write about Tannochside Welfare is the price.
At the time of my visit, you could get:
2 courses – £6.50
3 courses – £7.50
With the price of eating out seemingly going in one direction, finding somewhere you can sit down and have a multi-course lunch at that price feels increasingly rare.
I’ve tried several dishes across my visits, while others I’ve been with have ordered different things, so I’ve managed to see a decent selection of what they offer.
Steak Pie – My Highlight

The steak pie has been the standout for me.
There’s something about traditional steak pie, potatoes and all the usual trimmings that fits somewhere like Tannochside Welfare perfectly.
One thing I do need to point out, though, is that when I ordered the steak pie it was from the main menu, before it was added to the cheaper value lunch menu.
The portion on the value menu is therefore different from the one shown in my original visit and photos.
I think that’s worth making clear rather than showing a photo of a larger main-menu portion and suggesting that’s exactly what you’ll receive as part of the cheaper lunch deal.
Either way, the steak pie itself was the highlight of my visit.
Lasagne

I’ve also tried the lasagne.
Again, this is exactly the type of food I want from an affordable pub lunch.
Nothing unnecessarily complicated – just familiar comfort food at a price that makes it easy to pop in for lunch without turning it into an expensive meal out.
Soup and Mixed Pakora

Having proper starter choices is what makes the two and three-course pricing particularly impressive.
For £7.50 at the time of my visit, you could have three separate courses for less than the price of a single main course in plenty of pubs and restaurants.
That’s difficult to argue with.
What Else Is Available?
I’ve visited with other people too, which has given me the chance to see a few more dishes without having to personally eat the entire menu.
Other choices ordered at our table have included:
- Chilli cheese bites
- Chicken burger
- Cheeseburger
- Macaroni cheese
It’s straightforward, familiar pub grub, which I think suits the place perfectly.
This isn’t somewhere I’d visit expecting fine dining.
It’s somewhere I’d visit because I want a filling, affordable lunch served by friendly people.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The Staff Deserve a Mention
Another big positive has been the staff.
Every time I’ve been in, I’ve found them cracking.
Places like this rely heavily on having that friendly local atmosphere, and good service makes a huge difference to the overall experience.
It feels like a proper community venue rather than a restaurant that’s trying too hard to be something it isn’t.
Where Is Tannochside Miners Welfare?
You’ll find Tannochside Miners Welfare at:
438 Old Edinburgh Road
Uddingston
G71 6PJ
It’s a long-standing community club as well as somewhere to grab food and a drink, with entertainment and other events regularly taking place.
I’d recommend checking their latest food times, menu and prices before travelling specifically for lunch, as these can obviously change.
Is Tannochside Welfare Worth Visiting for Lunch?
For value alone, it’s very difficult to complain.
When I visited, £6.50 for two courses or £7.50 for three was an unbelievable lunch deal.
The steak pie was my personal highlight, although remember that the version I originally tried was from the main menu rather than the current value-menu portion.
Throw in friendly staff, traditional pub grub and prices that feel like they’ve been transported from another decade, and Tannochside Welfare is definitely worth knowing about if you’re looking for a cheap lunch around Lanarkshire.
It isn’t fancy.
It doesn’t need to be.
Sometimes a good plate of pub grub at a brilliant price is exactly what you’re looking for.
My pick: Steak pie
Best feature: The value
Would I return? Absolutely.
I really don’t see how anyone can complain at this.
We are talking about major no thrills, good food, great service all at a price that is going to be hard to beat.
If I stayed close to here I would just not be making any food for myself I would just pop in here each day and take advantage of this outstanding deal.
I’m building an interactive map of every food spot I’ve visited over the last few years. It will update with every post I make.
